چکیده
Introduction: Cerebral malaria is a severe complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection which may account for 80% deaths of patients admitted to the hospitals. 1 Cerebral malaria may be gradual in onset, but it is commonly sudden, a progressive headache, may be followed by a coma, uncontrollable rise in temperature to above 108 "F. and psychotic symptoms or convulsions, specially in children . Death may be certain in a matter of hours. In diagnosis based on symptoms alone, Malaria cannot be distinguished from other febrile illness, and the species of Plasmodium causing the fever, if any, cannot be identified. 2

Effects of Cerebral Malaria on Platelet count, Platelet factor – 3 and Platelet aggregate availability in children
Malaria is a formidable global parasitic infection that presents a major health challenge in tropical countries especially among children. A total of 130 children (65 males and 65 females) with cerebral malaria and the same number and ratio for healthy children were considered as control; all aged 1-9 years. Standard haematological method was used to determine the Packed cell volume, platelet a...
متن کاملThrombocytopenia and Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children with different exposures.
We studied thrombocytopenia during acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria in 64 traveller children from Paris (France), 85 children from Dakar (Senegal) with an intermittent exposure (69 with severe attack or cerebral malaria), and 81 children from Libreville (Gabon) with a perennial exposure (43 with severe attack or cerebral malaria). Initial thrombocytopenia was present in 43-58% of children wi...
متن کاملThe Platelet Count in Cerebral Malaria, Is It Useful to the Clinician?
We conducted this study to determine the prognostic significance of the platelet count in children with cerebral malaria. We studied children with cerebral malaria admitted to the pediatric research ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi. We analyzed 1,811 children with cerebral malaria and compared them with 521 children with bacterial meningitis. There was a significant difference i...
متن کاملHuman immunodeficiency virus infection and cerebral malaria in children in Uganda: a case-control study
BACKGROUND Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection increases the burden of malaria by increasing susceptibility to infection and decreasing the response to malarial treatment. HIV-1 has also been found to suppress the immune system and predispose to severe forms of malaria in adults. There is still a paucity of data on the association between HIV-1 infection and cerebral malaria in child...
متن کاملLymphocyte Perturbations in Malawian Children with Severe and Uncomplicated Malaria
Lymphocytes are implicated in immunity and pathogenesis of severe malaria. Since lymphocyte subsets vary with age, assessment of their contribution to different etiologies can be difficult. We immunophenotyped peripheral blood from Malawian children presenting with cerebral malaria, severe malarial anemia, and uncomplicated malaria (n = 113) and healthy aparasitemic children (n = 42) in Blantyr...
